The purple tetra ( Nannostomus mortenthaleri ) belongs to the slender tetra family (Lebiasinidae) and occurs in the river basin of the Rio Nanay in the Peruvian region of Loreto and in the nearby Rio Tigre . The species was initially described in 2001 as a subspecies of the dwarf tetra ( Nannostomus marginatus ) , but has been listed as an independent species since 2003. The species was named after Martin Mortenthaler, who discovered the fish in March 2000.

features

The purple tetra has an elongated spindle-shaped body and becomes three centimeters long. The top is brownish. On each side of the body there are three longitudinal ligaments, the subdorsal and submidlateral ones extend to the base of the caudal fin, the third one, along the lower outline of the body, to the attachment of the anal fin. The middle and lower ones start at the tip of the snout, the upper one behind the eye. Adult males are characterized by an intense red color between the longitudinal ligaments. The red color includes the upper part of the iris and extends to the base of the caudal fin. Females are yellowish in color between the longitudinal ligaments. The front edge of the dorsal fin is colored white-red. The other rays of the dorsal fin are black, the fin membrane is light, so that a dark line pattern is created. The rear edges of the pelvic and anal fins are black. In contrast to the dwarf ornamental tetra subspecies (and the nominate form N. marginatus marginatus ), which mainly have four, five or six-pointed teeth, those of Nannostomus mortenthaleri are three-pointed.

Aquaristics

The fish were first imported to Germany as aquarium fish by Aquarium Dietzenbach in June 2000 and soon afterwards they were also brought to Germany.
