The dwarf ornamental tetra has a more compact body than other Nannostomus species and is one of the smallest species in the genus with a length of 3.5 to 4 centimeters. It swims horizontally and is golden yellow in color, the back is olive green, the underside is white. Three black longitudinal stripes run from the head to the tail stalk. The middle longitudinal stripe is the widest, with a short red line on its upper edge. There is a red spot each on the dorsal , anal and pelvic fins . The leading edges of the dorsal and anal fin are black.
The sexes can be differentiated by the anal fin, which in the male is rounded at the back, in the female it ends straight and is pointed. Dwarf tetra spawn between delicate plants, in the aquarium every 3 to 4 days if they are well fed.
