The Purtse River ( Estonian Purtse jõgi ) is a river in northern Estonia .
description
The river Purtse has its source near the village of Tudu on the eastern edge of the Punasoo moor in the rural municipality of Vinni in the Lääne-Viru district . It flows into the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea .
The Purtse River is 51 km long. Its catchment area covers 810 km². Its average flow rate is 6.67 m³ / s.
The body of water is one of the rivers in Estonia with the most rapids .
Right tributary is the Kohtla River .
The Sillaoru hydropower plant (300 kW) is located on the river .
Before World War II , the river was known for its salmon . With the Soviet phosphorite mining and the subsequent environmental pollution, the fish became extinct.
