features
This small catfish species becomes up to twelve centimeters long. The body is light brown with black dots in the head area and black stripes over the entire body area. The stripe pattern is particularly evident on the fins. Males develop bristle-like odontodes on the front pectoral fins and in the back of the body . Females also have a slightly larger body size and are slightly darker in color.
Way of life
This peaceful, omnivorous catfish shows territorial but not aggressive behavior. The fish is a cave breeder . In the aquarium, the water temperature should be around 22-26 degrees and the pH between 5.8 and 7.8.
designation
The species was described by La Monte in 1935 . The scientific name Peckoltia brevis is reminiscent of Gustavo Peckolt, member of the Natural History Commission of Rondon. The addition brevis (Latin for "short" or "small") describes the short body shape. In the aquarium hobby the species was introduced in 2004 with the designation LDA78.
Similar species
The scientifically undescribed species Peckoltia sp. L205 is very similar except for the extent of the puncture in the head area.
