Renal pelvis
The renal pelvis ( Latin pelvis renalis , Greek pyelos ) is the funnel-shaped upper end of the ureter , which serves as a collecting funnel for the urine from the collecting tubes . It's part of the urinary tract . The renal pelvis is located in the inner cavity of the kidney ( sinus renalis ) and usually goes horizontally (or slightly downwards) from the center of the kidney. The renal pelvis is lined by a mucous membrane with a urothelium . Historically, the renal pelvis arises from theUreteral bud .
The renal pelvis calyx system ( NBKS ) is the name given to the system of renal pelvis and kidney calyx ( calix renalis ), which forwards the urine to the ureter ( ureter ).
In horses, the mucous membrane contains mucous glands. Mammals with a lobed kidney ( marine mammals , bears ) or multi-waxy, furrowed kidneys ( ruminants ) do not have a renal pelvis.
Diseases
Inflammation of the kidney pelvis ( pyelitis )
Pyelitis usually results from an infection that has risen through the ureter , which can also spread to the kidney tissue (kidney parenchyma ) (then referred to as pyelonephritis ). A high feverish renal pelvic inflammation in pregnant women ( pyelitis gravidarum as part of pyelonephritis gravidarum) was first described in detail by Rudolf Kaltenbach in 1872 . Inflammation of the kidney pelvis is favored by drainage disorders (e.g. kidney stones) or insufficient flushing (insufficient urine production).
The treatment consists of a significantly increased fluid intake (more than 3 liters per day) and an administration of antibiotics that are not metabolized and thus still have their effect in the urine, such as B. cotrimoxazole or gyrase inhibitors .
Renal pelvic stones
Renal pelvic stones are a special localization of kidney stones (see there for details). They can fill the entire renal pelvis and are then called kidney stones . The kidney stones usually have to be removed surgically.
Renal pelvic cancer
The renal pelvis carcinoma is a malignant tumor of the renal pelvis. Men are affected significantly more often than women, and the highest risk of the disease is between the ages of 50 and 60.
Fornix rupture
The fornix rupture refers to the tear in the renal pelvis in the transition area to the parenchyma due to an increase in pressure in the renal pelvis, this is usually caused by ureteral stones . The fornix rupture is a urological emergency that requires immediate treatment.
