Pyun Hye-Young (* 1972 in Seoul ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Pyun Hye-Young was born in Seoul in 1972. She studied creative writing at the Seoul Institute of the Arts and completed postgraduate studies in Korean language and literature from Hanyang University . She made her debut in 2000 when she won the Seoul Shinmun newspaper's spring literature competition with the short story Knocking Off the Dew ( 이슬 털기 ) . The story is about a woman who was impregnated by her lover and then abandoned. She curses him for it and wishes him death, which ultimately happens. Pyun Hye-Young's first collection of short stories, Aoi Garden, is also filled with bizarre, cruel, threatening and subversive images such as the description of a slashed cat and its innards, the stench of a mountain of rotting garbage or an apartment complex in which an epidemic has broken out. In her second collection in the direction of the enclosure ( 사육장 쪽으로 ) there are less horrific stories that seem like nightmares from real life: a house that lies next to a swamp and is teeming with mice and vermin; a family who has to take their son to hospital after he was bitten by a dog; a man who put on a wolf's skin and is mistaken for a real free-roaming wolf, and a man who lost important documents along with his glasses.

With her special style of grotesque and unsightly images, Pyun Hye-Young creates an irrational world of chaos and confusion and stands out from the usual Korean literature. Critics therefore describe their works as subversive.
