Qairaghotsch ( Tajik Қайрағоч ; also called West Qalacha ) is a small exclave of Tajikistan , which is enclosed by the state of Kyrgyzstan and has an area of about one square kilometer. The exclave has 150 residents who are of Tajik descent .

location

Qairaghotsch located north of Alaigebirges at an altitude of 727 meters. In a north-easterly direction the landscape slopes down towards the Ferghana Valley . Administratively, Qairaghotsch belongs to the Tajik province of Sughd , which includes the northern part of the Tajik national territory and extends in the west and north of Qairaghotsch, separated from the exclave by only a narrow strip of Kyrgyz territory. The distance from the exclave to the national territory of Tajikistan is approximately 2.4 kilometers over Kyrgyz territory. The nearest Tajik city is Qalacha in the northeast of Qairaghotsch, therefore the exclave is also called West Qalacha.

In the west of the exclave there is a Kyrgyz village of the same name , which has gained a certain reputation due to its long history and some historically interesting buildings. Immediately north of Qairaghotsch on Kyrgyz territory is the Stantsiya Kayragach train station .

Challenges

Demarcation

In the Tajik-Kyrgyz border area there are repeated conflicts, which are often due to the unclear demarcation between neighboring countries. The fact that different areas belong to one another regularly caused complications at the diplomatic level and repeatedly strained the relationship between the two states. After several reports on different assessments of the exact border lines in the region, the Kyrgyz ambassador to the United States named two Tajik exclaves on Kyrgyzstan territory, Woruch and Qairaghotsch, but at the same time referred to the question of the correct demarcation in the region as "real." not an easy question ”.

The demarcation of the boundaries in the region is a problem that dates back to the time of the Soviet Union , when the borders were drawn between the then Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic and the Kyrgyz Soviet Socialist Republic . Already during the Soviet era, various bodies tried to find a solution to the disputes, but a final result was not achieved. However, the question of the exact demarcation only became explosive with the independence of the Central Asian states.

Infrastructure

The infrastructure in Qairaghotsch is barely developed, road connections between Kyrgyz and Tajik territory are barely available or difficult to pass. Another problem in Qairaghotsch is the water supply, which is not adequately secured due to a lack of infrastructure.
