Qalai Chumb ( Tajik Қалъаи Хумб , German fortress on the Khumb ) is a place in southern Tajikistan . The place has the administrative status of a Jamoat (municipality) and is located in the autonomous province of Berg-Badakhshan .
location
Qalai Chumb is located in the west of Berg-Badachschan on the Pandsch River , which in this region forms the border between Tajikistan and the southern neighbor Afghanistan . The place is located in the valley of the Pandsch at about 1260 meters above sea level at the confluence of the Obikhumboi river ( Khumb for short ) in the Pandsch. The area is dominated by the peaks of the Pamir Mountains , which here reach a height of more than 4000 meters.
history
The history of the place began in the 15th century with the construction of a fortress at the confluence of the Obikhumbol and Pandsch rivers by the Timurids . The fortress was built due to the strategic importance of the place and served as the eastern outpost of the Timurid Empire . In the 19th century , Qalai Chumb was the capital of the largely autonomous Darvaz region before it was dissolved in the course of Russian expansion in the region. As a result, Qalai Chumb became part of the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic and established itself as a regional center in Berg Badakhshan. During the war in Afghanistan , Qalai Chumb was used as a border town with Afghanistan for military operations and troop transports to Afghanistan.

Infrastructure
Qalai Chumb is located on the most important road between the autonomous province of Berg-Badakhshan and the western part of the country and is therefore relatively easy to reach. Since Qalai Chumb is about halfway between Chorugh , the capital of Berg Badachschan, and the Tajik capital of Dushanbe , the place is used by many travelers for a stopover. Because of these visitors, there are numerous pubs and restaurants in the place, which are used in particular by travelers. There is also a market, a gas station and a small airport that is used for regional flights.
The Ruzvat Bridge over the Pandsch River east of Qalai Chumb, which forms one of the few connections between Tajikistan and Afghan in this region, is also of great importance . The bridge was completed in 2004 with support from the Aga Khan Development Network . The bridge and the regularly held market with Afghan and Tajik traders there are important economic factors for Qalai Chumb.
