Quadrille based on motifs from the opera "Des Teufels Antheil"

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The quadrille based on motifs from the opera "Des Teufels Antheil" is a quadrille by Johann Strauss Sohn (without opus number). It was first performed on October 3, 1847 in Dommayers Casino in Vienna.

Remarks

The quadrille was composed of motifs from the now relatively unknown opera La Part du Diable (Eng. 'Des Teufels Antheil') by Daniel-François-Esprit Auber . The creation of the work was overshadowed by the dispute between the younger Johann Strauss and his father , who at the same time also composed a quadrille based on motifs from this opera. The older Strauss was faster and performed his work with some success on September 25, 1847 in the Zum Sperl dance hall . Afterwards, the younger Strauss also had the problem of finding a publisher for his work. Because the father's work was selling well at the time, it was a risk for publishers to bring out a quadrille of the same name by the younger Strauss. They feared it would only sell badly. Finally, the small publishing house of AO Witzendorf brought out the work as a special edition, i.e. without an opus number. The younger Strauss's quadrille wasn't too successful and he had to lag behind his father in this case. The work soon disappeared in the archives and the orchestral version was lost. The CD recording mentioned below was arranged by Christian Pollack based on the piano reduction.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 5 minutes and 56 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
