Quartz sand gloves , as clout reinforcing gloves known short stroke gloves are gloves , the back of the hand and around the ankle with protectors made of fine quartz sand , more rarely, of lead are provided dust. Often they are also equipped with a cut-resistant insert made of Kevlar .

Due to the sand filling, the gloves protect the hands from cuts (e.g. when attacking a knife). In addition, similar to the use of knuckles , punches made with such gloves have a much stronger effect .

According to media reports, quartz sand gloves are particularly popular in Germany among bouncers and police officers , but also among hooligans and in the right-wing and left-wing radical scene. Although the use of quartz sand gloves by police officers is generally prohibited because they are not officially approved pieces of equipment and can cause disproportionate injuries, a police union chairman said in December 2008 that many police officers have used them for years. The former police chief in Berlin, Dieter Glietsch , described the discovery of quartz sand gloves in 12 of 30 members of a police force in autumn 2008 as a “scandal” and the gloves themselves as a “weapon”. Quartz sand gloves are mostly of members of the riot police used while special police units usually have special uses and Rappel, often with foam protectors have.

Legal position

The legal situation is not uniform internationally. With the exception of Ireland, there are no general bans on quartz sand gloves within the European Union . They are illegal in Ireland under the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act 1990.

In Germany, the wearing of quartz sand gloves is largely permitted for private individuals. The basis for this is the decision of the Federal Criminal Police Office . Exceptions are all events that are subject to the Assembly Act (VersammlG), as these gloves are suitable for "warding off enforcement measures by a holder of sovereign powers" ( Section 17a VersammlG).

Quartz gloves were classified by the Federal Court of Justice (4 StR 51/12) as a dangerous tool within the meaning of § 224 StGB, which can lead to a punishment for dangerous bodily harm in the event of a corresponding attack .

In some countries, including Australia and Switzerland , they have restrictions because they are classified as dangerous weapons there. In the United States , they are banned in Massachusetts and California . Quartz sand gloves are not specifically illegal in New York , but possession is prohibited if the intention is to use them as a weapon against people.
