Cross section (mechanics)
In engineering mechanics , a distinction is profiles different types of cross-sections (a is isolated cross-sectional area erroneously referred to as cross-section; see FIG. Section ):
- simply connected cross-sections ( rectangular cross-sections , circular cross-sections )
- multiple contiguous cross-sections ( e.g. light metal profile made up of several cells).
Furthermore, one differentiates:
From the geometry of the cross-sectional areas, their area content as well as the area moments of inertia and resistance moments can be calculated. Together with the loads such as forces or bending or torsional moments , the occurring stresses can be calculated, which are decisive for the failure of the components.
