Quiet Internet Pager ( German : silent Internet messenger ) or QIP for short (spoken: "KU-IE-PE" or "KJU-AI-PIE", often simply "Kwipp") is a free and ad-free instant messenger from Russia for ICQ and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM).

Development and history

The development of the client began in autumn 2004. The developer attached great importance to the fact that QIP does not appear overloaded and only masters the basic functions of a messenger such as sending and receiving. Neither an opulent graphic surface nor sound reproduction were originally planned. This is how the name "Quiet Internet Pager" came about.

The first alpha version was released in mid-May 2005, followed by numerous updates. The test phase ended in May 2006.

Other versions for Windows Mobile and Symbian OS are now available.

QIP is programmed in Delphi . The source code cannot be published because a commercial module is integrated, as the developer announced.

The program was later officially translated into German by Jannik Lex.

Functions

In addition to the normal functions of ICQ and AIM, QIP offers many other functions that are intended to increase security and convenience of use.

QIP informs users when someone has written to them or when the away message (QIP 2005 only) is read. This is done by a pop-up sliding in above the taskbar, which can be switched off at will.

Acknowledgments of receipt and encryption of messages (the latter only between QIP clients) are possible. There are extensive setting options to protect against unwanted messages, for example spam protection. The client, the version, the client features and, under certain conditions, the IP address of contacts can be displayed (e.g. when transferring files). In the meantime, this data transfer did not work for a short time due to the conversion of the client ICQ from version 5.1 to 6, but it is functional again with version 8040.

Messages can also be sent to the complete contact list, certain groups or, optionally, several contacts. The contacts you are talking to are treated as tabs, which avoids further open windows. In addition to using several ICQ accounts, you can also register new UINs with the client.

The contact list can be set so that it is always in the foreground without covering other applications (docking). Like many other instant messengers, QIP has skin capability .

The software has a so-called boss button . A key combination makes both the contact list and the status image disappear from the system tray . The connection is not interrupted and the client can be made visible again at any time.

You can remove yourself from other users' contact lists and, conversely, find out when other users try to remove yourself from your own contact list.

Versions

QIP 2012

The QIP Infium and QIP 2010 versions are combined under the name QIP 2012 . As soon as the first official build of QIP 2012 appears, they will therefore no longer be developed further. In QIP 2012 all fixes and features, with the exception of the interface, from QIP 2010 are included. The rest is based on QIP Infium . On October 7, 2011, QIP 2012 was officially published.

QIP Infium

QIP Infium has been available as a beta version since mid-June 2007. It supports two new protocols, XMPP and XIMSS , and multiple accounts in one window . Furthermore, there is now a plug-in system and synchronization via Twitter and Facebook is possible. On February 19, 2010 the first stable version of QIP Infium Build 9034 was released.

QIP 2010

QIP 2010 was released on April 5, 2010, and is the successor version of QIP 2005 . It is based on QIP Infium , but has a few restrictions in terms of features. Users of QIP 2005 should slowly be introduced to QIP Infium with the version , as the development of these two completely different projects takes too much time and the developers save a lot of work through the parallels between QIP 2010 and QIP Infium .

QIP 2005

The number 2005 in the program name indicates the year of the first publication. This version has been developed since the end of 2004. In the meantime, patches for fixing program errors or for adapting the program in the event of protocol changes are only published irregularly .

QIP PDA

QIP PDA has been programmed by QIP inventors Ilgam "Inf" Zulkorneev and Alexander Smirnov since mid-2006. This version was developed for Windows Mobile , a version called QIP PDA Symbian for Symbian OS is also available.

The structure of the version for mobile devices is based on QIP 2005, but has one important difference: There is the option of integrating further protocols in addition to OSCAR in a later version .
