XIMSS stands for X ML I nterface to M essaging, S cheduling, and S ignaling and is an XML-based open software interface for IP communication.
Development and history
The software interface or application programming interface XIMSS was implemented in version 5.1 of CommuniGate Pro in the summer of 2006 to enable platform-independent developments for Internet communication such as e-mail , groupware , instant messaging and VoIP . XIMSS is based on earlier XML RFCs and was submitted for standardization.
When CommuniGate Systems began developing the XIMSS protocol in 2003, there were few standards-based clients such as Windows Messenger or Counterpath's Eyebeam, and various operating systems such as Mac OS X were not supported. Even in the open source environment, there was little activity to include presence in e-mail and calendar applications. Experience with SIP as the standard was still at an early stage.
Using XIMSS, XML- based applications can be inserted into the CommuniGate Pro platform. The Quiet Internet Pager QIP also supports the XIMSS protocol.
