Kalanchoe daigremontiana is a species of the genus Kalanchoe in the family of thick-leaf plants (Crassulaceae). It is common in Madagascar and is used as a houseplant .

description

Vegetative characteristics

The upright, biennial to perennial, succulent plant reaches heights of 30 to 150 centimeters. The simple, brownish stems are erect or prostrate-erect. The triangular, pointed, dark green, pink-green to purple-green, brown-red spotted, fleshy leaves are 15 to 28 inches long and 2 to 5 inches wide. The stem-encompassing leaf stalks are 2 to 5 centimeters long. Numerous brood buds form on the notched leaf margins .

Kalanchoe daigremontiana is very variable in terms of the size and color of the leaves.

Inflorescences and flowers

The many-flowered inflorescence is a loose, paniculate cyme . The flower stalk is between 5 and 11 millimeters long. The pendulous or splayed flowers are hermaphroditic and four-fold. The four sepals are fused to form a 2.5 to 6 millimeter long calyx tube, which ends in triangular, pointed calyx lobes 3 to 5 millimeters long and 2.2 to 3.6 millimeters wide. The four reddish to purple petals are fused together like a bell. The corolla tube is 16 to 19 millimeters long. Their obovate, pointed corolla lobes are 7 to 8 millimeters long and 3.5 to 4.5 millimeters wide. There are two circles with four stamens each; they are attached below the center of the corolla tube. The upper stamens protrude from the corolla tube. The 1.2 to 25 millimeter large anthers are kidney-shaped. The nectar flakes , about 1.5 to 2 millimeters long and 0.3 to 1 millimeters wide, are more or less rectangular with a blunt to edged tip. The four carpels are about 6 millimeters long. The stylus has a length between 11 and 15 millimeters.

Four follicles are formed per flower , which have a length of 7 to 10 millimeters and a width of 2 to 4 millimeters. The tiny seeds are 0.6 to 1 millimeter × 0.2 to 0.3 millimeters in size.

Systematics and distribution

It was first described in 1914 by the two French botanists Raymond-Hamet and Joseph Marie Henry Alfred Perrier de la Bâthie . They dedicated the epithet of the species to the Daigremonts, who were members of the French Botanical Society. Alwin Berger placed the species as Bryophyllum daigremontianum in the genus Bryophyllum recognized by him .

Kalanchoe daigremontiana is common in the southwest of Madagascar in open forests on sandstone or limestone. It grows wild in some tropical countries (e.g. India ).
