information first arcade lightgun game

Qwak! is an arcade game released by Atari on November 5, 1974 . It was the first arcade game with an optical light gun and simulated a duck hunt .

description

In this game, which can only be played by one person, ducks have to be shot down virtually. Individual ducks appear on the black and white monitor at random on the edge of the screen and fly by with a "Qwak!" Sound. The player aims the lightgun in the form of a rifle at the monitor and has three shots to hit the duck. If successful, the screen flashes, the duck falls down and is taken away to the left by a hunting dog. The number of ducks killed is shown at the top of the screen.

If the shot just misses, the duck changes its flight direction.

technology

Playing with the Durastress hardware from Atari did not yet have microprocessors (CPUs) but, like other early games (e.g. Pong ), had hardwired ("discrete") circuits. In front of the b / w monitor, there is a colored overlay film with printed grass and a branch. The rifle with the light gun is firmly chained to the device and also secured against theft by an alarm.

influence

Qwak! influenced many later lightgun games such as Safari Hunt (Sega, 1986), Shoot Away , Triple Hunt (Atari, 1977) and especially the more popular Duck Hunt (Nintendo, 1984).

Atari himself developed an arcade prototype called Qwak in 1982, which was supposed to represent a puzzle game with a duck-hunting scene.

From 1989 the jump-'n'-run series "Qwak" by Team17 appeared .

The game can be seen in the movie Zombie (Dawn of the Dead).
