Ráfaga (also Grupo Ráfaga ) is an Argentine cumbia band that was formed in 1994. They are one of the most successful groups of the so-called Cumbia Romántica wave of the 1990s and one of the few Argentine cumbia bands that were also successful in Europe (especially in Romania , Switzerland , Spain and Sweden ).

The band is also known for their elaborate and glamorous costumes at the live shows, which were influenced by the medieval look and were imitated by other cumbia bands.

Band history

The band was formed in 1994. Her debut album Soplando Fuerte was released in 1996 and was able to enter the Argentine charts. A year later they made the leap to international fame when they took part in the Midem Latino de Música show in Miami . Then they became known in numerous countries in Latin America as well as in Spain.

In 1999 they had their biggest hit so far, La Luna y Tú . The band then toured Spain (1999/2000), North America (2001) and Europe (2001). With the album Marca Registrada (2002) they changed stylistically to Latin Pop for a short time and then returned to Cumbia.

In 2003 there was a major change when the singer Ariel Pucheta , the previous figurehead Ráfagas, left the band to start a solo career. He was replaced by the young singer Rodrigo Tapari . Since then there have been several disputes between Pucheta and the other band members over the rights to the brand name Ráfaga. With the new line-up, which was accompanied by an image correction away from the glamorous presentation of the 90s and early 2000s, the band was no longer able to fully build on the old successes.

In 2007 the band collaborated with the Romanian Balkan pop musician and rapper Korekt , with whom they released the title Sabes .

style

Ráfaga mix the typical cumbia rhythm with elements from the merengue and other Caribbean music styles in their music . The accordion , which dominates the cumbia, enters into an interplay with unusually present brass sections. The piano, which otherwise only plays a simple offbeat in the cumbia, takes on more complex parts in the band's music, which are otherwise characteristic of the merengue or son . The electric guitar , which is otherwise rarely used in the cumbia, and isolated electronic elements such as synthesizer basses are also typical for the sound of the group.
