... look into the tunnel

A disused mining tunnel in the Hundisburg district of Haldensleben is popularly referred to as a robber's cave . Copper was mined here in the 18th and 19th centuries . It is entered in the local register of monuments as a culturally, historically and technically significant testimony to the historic copper mining in the region. The tunnel is located in an agricultural area in the Olbetal in the immediate vicinity of the Olbe (which flows 250 meters further north into the Beber ), about 1.5 kilometers west of the center of Hundisburg, on a dirt road between Hundisburg and Klein-Rottmersleben.

history

The first commercial development was established in Haldensleben and the surrounding area in the 15th century with the emergence of copper mines - including on the Papenberg and the Kienberg . However, these businesses soon died due to a lack of profitability. At later times, tunnels were repeatedly built in the region, such as the mining gallery near Hundisburg, now known as the "robber's cave" in the 18th century. After the shutdown, copper mining was briefly resumed in the first half of the 19th century under Johann Gottlob Nathusius . Nathusius needed copper for processing in the copper hammer he operated in Hundisburg . In 1824 he had the nearby colliery built as a lodging house for the miners . The tunnel was driven about 15 meters deep into the Grauwacke there .

The Hundisburger Stollen probably served as a template for the grave in Karl Immermann's poem "Merlins Grab". The “Räuberhöhle” restaurant in Hundisburg is named after the tunnel.
