Réjane Cardinal

Réjane Cardinal (born December 25, 1926 in Montreal ; † June 11, 2000 there ) was a Canadian singer (mezzo-soprano).

Life

Cardinal had private lessons with Roger Filiatrault from 1941 to 1943 and then studied at the École Vincent-d'Indy . In 1947 she was a scholarship holder of the Sarah Fischer Concerts , and in 1948 of the Montreal Social Club . From 1949 to 1951 she was a student of Charles Panzéra in Paris, where she gave several concerts during this time. After returning to Montreal, she studied opera singing with Raoul Jobin .

For Youth and Music Canada Cardinal undertook a concert tour through the province of Quebec in 1951 and 1952, and another through France from 1962–63. With the Variétés lyriques she sang the Suzuki in Madama Butterfly in 1953 . On CBC radio , she appeared as Marie in Hector Berlioz ' L'enfance du Christ , as Genviève in Claude Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande , in Francis Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites and in Giacomo Puccini's Suor Angelica .

For her portrayal of the mother in the CBC television production of Gian-Carlo Menotti's opera Amahl and the nocturnal visitors , she received the 1961 award for best opera artist at the Congrès du spectacle in Montreal. In 1962 she sang the Dorabella in six performances of Così fan tutte at the Montreal Festivals . At the Théâtre lyrique de Nouvelle-France she was Taven in Gounods Mireille in 1965 and Charlotte in Massenets Werther in the 1968–69 season . As a concert singer, she has appeared several times with the Quebec Symphony Orchestra .
