The Réserve écologique Irène-Fournier is an ecological reserve in the south of the Canadian province of Québec .
It was established in 1991 on an area of 440 ha. It is located on the Gaspé peninsula in the regional county municipality of La Matanie , not far from Matane in the Berry Mountains , more precisely between the Rivière Cascapédia and west of Mont Noble .
The area protects a representative, albeit small, part of the deciduous and coniferous forests in the Notre-Dame mountains of the Hauts monts Notre-Dame . The so-called sapinière à bouleau blanc , i.e. fir forest with paper birch trees, predominates here.
The north side of the Berry Mountains rises between 230 and 700 m above sea level. The subsoil consists of layers of clay and sandstone, which belong to two geological formations, between which there is a volcanic rock lens. A thin to medium-thick layer of tillit with organic material is deposited on top .
The predominant fir-birch forest covers the locations between 350 and 700 m altitude. The moist areas with sufficient organic matter, on the other hand, are occupied by different forest types, such as the fir- gray-alder , fir- black spruce , black spruce forest, etc.
The name of the reserve goes back to Irène Fournier (1912–1974), a botanist who has made a contribution to teaching biology and botany .
