The Réserve écologique du Grand-Lac-Salé is an ecological reserve in the east of the Canadian province of Québec . It was established in 1996 on an area of 2339 ha. It is located in the county municipality of Minganie , in the central south of the island of Anticosti , and encloses the largest salt water lagoon and the largest salt marshes in the Anticosti-Minganie region, the so-called Great Salt Lake, the Grand-Lac-Salé.

Arethusa bulbosa
Red stem moss

The subsurface of the area consists of sedimentary rocks that are between 400 and 600 million years old. They belong to the Chicotte Formation, whose name is derived from the nearby Chicotte River (not from the French name for the hippopotamus whip ). The boundaries between the shore area and the permanently tide-free plateau area above are sharply demarcated. In addition to sand and gravel, there are large amounts of organic material on the plateau. This plateau drops almost vertically from a height of 5 to 15 m. The northern section of the cliffs is covered by a thin layer of tillit . The actual coastal fringe is also divided into an area that is rarely flooded and one that is completely exposed to the tides.

On the flood-free soil there are fir forests with white spruce and red stem moss ( Pleurozium schreberi ). Many plants typical of these coastal areas can be seen, including endangered species such as Arethusa bulbosa , which lives in the wet meadows and moors of North America. Also at risk are hem sedge ( Carex hostiana ) Cypripedium parviflorum var. Planipetalum in the genus Cypripedium , Drosera linearis , a carnivorous plant in the genus sundew ( Drosera ) and Xyris montana from the family of xyridaceae .
