The Réservoir Opinaca is a reservoir in the Canadian province of Québec . It is part of the Baie James hydropower project .

The reservoir, in which there are numerous islands, has a water surface of 1040 km² at an altitude of 216 m above sea level. The main tributaries are the Rivière Eastmain and the Rivière Opinaca .

Several dams regulate the reservoir:

  • Barrage OA-05 at the outflow of the Rivière Opinaca
  • Barrage OA-10A and Barrage OA-10B
  • Barrage OA-11 at the outflow of the Rivière Eastmain
  • Ouvrage régulateur de la Sarcelle (21.4 m high; 688 m long; completed in 1980), a regulating weir on the discharge to the Robert-Bourassa Réservoir.

The Sarcelle hydropower plant at the outlet to the Robert-Bourassa Réservoir is under construction . The gradient between the Réservoir Opinaca (211.8–215.8 m) and Lac Boyd (201.2 m) is to be used to generate energy. Three turbines with a total output of 150 MW are to generate an annual output of 1.1 TWh. The expansion flow is 1290 m³ / s.
