The Résidence Nord ( Dutch : Noordresidentie or Residentie Noord ) is a residential tower in Quartier Nord , the central business district of the Belgian capital, Brussels . The building is on Rue du Progrès , not far from Brussels-North train station .
history
Construction work on Résidence Nord began in 1972 and was completed in 1978, but the first residents could move into their apartments as early as 1976. The tower is considered to be one of the first completed projects in Quartier Nord. The former mayor, Roger Nols , had the facility built under the Manhattan Plan . The Antwerp company Amelinckx , which had its headquarters in the building until its bankruptcy in 1986, was responsible for the construction . The building has a height of 82 meters, which are spread over 28 floors. It is thus the third tallest residential tower in Brussels and is also one of the tallest buildings in the country . The tower has 322 residential units and around 750 residents, the centrality and affordable rental and purchase prices attract people and families of all ages and nationalities.
The intentions of the Manhattan Plan are particularly evident in this building. The roof of the 13 meter high base serves as an esplanade, which should be provided with pedestrian bridges and lead to the other planned surrounding towers. For this reason, the current main entrance on the ground floor is less imposing than the entrance halls on the esplanade level. The street was to be reserved for motorized traffic, with residents being able to park their cars in the parking garage on the first floor through the entrance on Rue du Progrès. On the second and third floors, as on the ground floor, there are offices. From the fifth floor onwards, the tower itself is divided into two halves, each with three types of apartments (studio, 1 bedroom, 2 bedrooms).
According to the Manhattan plan , the Résidence Nord II should have been built on the green space right next to the building , but the focus was on the more lucrative office towers and the site lay fallow for 30 years. It was not until 2011 that more but lower residential towers, a kindergarten and a small park were built at this point.
From 2011 to 2014 the building was renovated.
