The Río Balao Grande is a 44 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in southwest Ecuador . Including source rivers, the total length is 75 km.

River course

The Río Balao Grande arises on the western slope of the Cordillera Occidental at an altitude of about 550  m at the confluence of the Río Chaucha and Río Chacayacu . The source rivers arise in the Cajas National Park at heights of up to 4000  m . The Río Balao Grande flows mainly in a westerly direction. The Río Balao Grande reaches the coastal lowlands. There the Río Pijilí joins the Río Balao Grande from the left. This crosses the provincial border from Azuay to Guayas . The trunk road E25 crosses the course of the river at river kilometer 20. 7 km above the mouth, the Río Balao Grande passes the small town of Balao . The confluence with the Gulf of Guayaquil is 75 km south of the city of Guayaquil . The catchment area of the Río Balao Grande covers about 790 km². The Rio La Jagua runs north of the Río Balao Grande and south of the Río Gala .
