The headwaters of the Río Cononaco lies in the Amazon lowlands in the province of Orellana at an altitude of about 350  m , 65 km south-southeast of Puerto Francisco de Orellana . The Río Cononaco has along its entire river a strongly meandering behavior, with numerous meanders and oxbow lakes . Initially it flows mainly in a southerly direction. At river kilometers 306 and 300 the rivers Río Yamino from the left and Río Cononaco Chico from the right flow into the river. Below the confluence of the Río Cononaco Chico , the Río Cononaco forms the provincial border between Orellana and Pastaza . At river kilometer 275 the Río Shiripuno meets at river kilometer 243 the Río Tiguino meets the Río Cononaco, both on the right side. The Río Cononaco then turns to the east, later to the east-southeast and finally flows into the Río Curaray at the Peruvian state border. On the lower 225 kilometers, the Río Cononaco runs along or within the Yasuní National Park .
