The Río Curaray is an approximately 1070 km long right tributary of the Río Napo in Ecuador and Peru .
River course
The Río Curaray rises in the eastern foothills of the Cordillera Real at an altitude of about 950 m . The headwaters are located 33 km east-northeast of Puyo in the Ecuadorian province of Pastaza . The Río Curaray initially flows 70 km in an east-northeast direction. Later it turns to the east and from river kilometer 940 it turns to the east-southeast. It flows through the Amazon basin and shows a strongly meandering behavior, with numerous river bends and oxbow lakes . Larger tributaries in the upper reaches are the Río Ogian , Río Tzapino and Río Nushiño from the left. At river kilometer 870 the settlement Curaray is on the left bank of the river. There the Río Villano meets the river on the right. At river kilometer 537 the Río Curaray reaches Peru. At river kilometer 525 the Río Cononaco meets the Río Curaray from the left. For the next five kilometers, this forms the state border between Peru and Ecuador. On this section, the Río Curaray borders the province of Orellana . The Río Curaray then flows through the Peruvian province of Maynas in a predominantly east-southeast direction. Finally, the Río Curaray meets the Río Napo, 325 km above its mouth in the Amazon .
Catchment area
The Río Curaray drains an area of about 26,900 km². 16,700 km² of this is in Ecuador. Only 510 km² of the catchment area are above an altitude of 500 m and can be attributed to the Andes . The rest of the area extends over the Amazon lowlands of Ecuador and Peru.
