River course

The Río León has its source in the Cordillera Real on the provincial border between Azuay and Morona Santiago at an altitude of about 3350  m .

It initially flows 60 km in a predominantly west-south-west direction through the mountains. Coming from the south, the two tributaries Río Udushapa and Río Oña flow into the Río León. This forms the provincial border between Azuay and Loja from river kilometer 30 . For the lower 20 km, the Río León turns north and finally joins the Río Rircay to form the Río Jubones.
