The Bachverein Düsseldorf is an independent chamber choir that currently consists of around 35 active singers. In around three to four concerts a year, the choir devotes itself preferably to demanding a cappella music, often also to lesser-known works. In addition, cantatas, masses and oratorios from all epochs are performed. The profile of the choir has been shaped since 1989 by its artistic director Thorsten Pech .

The Bachverein Düsseldorf was founded in 1870 by the then Düsseldorf music director Wilhelm Schauseil and during this time it was able to record well-known contributors such as Clara Schumann and Lilli Lehmann . After an interruption due to the war, the choir experienced a revival from 1919 under the direction of Joseph Neyses , who later became the director of the Robert Schumann Conservatory . He shaped the choir profile for 56 years. During this time, the choir performed works from the early baroque and baroque epochs in authentic interpretations that were still little widespread at the time. The Bachverein was able to organize important performances, for example with the participation of Peter Pears , Hermann Prey and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau .

In 1976 the musicologist Hans-Josef Irmen took over the musical direction of the choir and expanded the repertoire to include oratorio works from the Romantic era. After a very short phase under the direction of Wolfram Fürll from 1985 to 1988, the Bachverein has again experienced a phase of continuous and successful choir work since 1989 with its current artistic director Thorsten Pech , in which the musical focus is again in the direction of demanding a cappella -Music has moved. Works by contemporary composers, especially from the Düsseldorf area, are also regularly on the program. B. by Jürg Baur , Peter Paul Förster , Max Beckschäfer , Lutz-Werner Hesse and Gunther Martin Göttsche . Some of the works were even composed for or premiered by the Bachverein Düsseldorf. The Bachverein Düsseldorf is currently preparing for its 150th anniversary in 2020; it is one of the most traditional choirs in Düsseldorf.
