Hans-Josef Irmen

Hans-Josef Irmen (born February 5, 1938 in Mönchengladbach ; † August 12, 2007 in Zülpich ) was a German music teacher, musicologist and conductor. His research focus was historical musicology , especially Viennese classical music and fin de siecle music , on which he presented numerous publications.

biography

Irmen, son of a master locksmith , studied after graduating from high school in 1957 at the Pedagogical Academy in Aachen and has been working as a primary school teacher in Mönchengladbach since 1959 . In 1965 he began studying music at the Cologne University of Music , majoring in violin, which he completed in 1967 with the state examination. He studied musicology , philosophy and education at the University of Cologne and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. His doctoral thesis entitled "Gabriel Josef Rheinberger as the antipode of Cäcilianism" was published in 1970.

Irmen then worked as a lecturer and academic adviser at the Rhineland University of Education in Neuss and in 1978 was appointed full professor for music and its didactics at the Aachen University of Education, which was incorporated into the TH Aachen in 1980 . In 1986 he switched to the chair for music and its didactics at the University of Essen , where he taught until his retirement in 2003.

From 1974 to 1985 Irmen was artistic director and conductor of the Bachverein Düsseldorf . As part of this activity, Irmen brought the missing Markus Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach in the reconstruction by Gustav Adolf Theill for the German premiere. After extensive studies in Vienna, in 1978 he presented his own new version of Mozart's Requiem , in which he added Mozart's own works to the parts of the funeral mass that were no longer composed. The new version was premiered in the newly opened Düsseldorf Tonhalle in the same year .
