Compositional work

The focus of Hesse's compositional work lies in the chamber music and orchestral areas. He prefers genres that can look back on a rich tradition. There are now four string quartets (the fourth with alto solo) and u. a. four symphonies , the concerto for orchestra and one violin and one horn concerto each (composed for Ulrike Anima Mathé and Marie-Luise Neunecker and premiered by both with great success) and a concerto for mandolin and string orchestra. His most successful work to date is the composition Vita di San Francesco - Eleven Stations from the Life of St. Francis of Assisi for organ and thirteen gongs , which has now been performed over forty times.

Hesse received numerous composition commissions, such as B. for the Third Symphony for large orchestra and organ op. 34 for the 100th anniversary of the historic town hall on Johannisberg in Wuppertal and for the Franziskus-Visionen op. 36, an orchestral work for the Philharmonic Orchestra Kiel , the fourth symphony " … Got lost ”op. 47 for the Bergische Symphoniker , the“ Variations without a theme ”op. 45 for the symphony orchestra Wuppertal and“ The workshop of butterflies ”op. 58 for the Beethovenorchester Bonn and much more in chamber music and vocal genres. Unusual ensembles play a role again and again, such as the tuba quartet and the plucked orchestra.

Musicological work

The work in the musicological field applies above all to the works of the composers Ralph Vaughan Williams , Edward Elgar , Carl August Nielsen and Dmitri Schostakowitsch .

Hesse's works were performed in many European countries, but also in the United States of America and Japan . The broadcasters of WDR, SR and SWR produced his works or recorded them at concerts.
