The Río Orizaba is a river that flows through the city of Orizaba in the Mexican state of Veracruz . It is a tributary of the Río Blanco , which crosses the southern Orizaba.

The course of the river

The Río Orizaba rises from a small spring called Ojo de Venado at the foot of the Citlaltépetl . It flows partly underground and joins some small watercourses that emerge on both sides of its course. To the west of Calle Madero , it crosses the city of Orizaba from north to south and flows into the Río Blanco at La Junta .

bridges

In order to connect the western urban area with the eastern urban area, a series of bridges were built, which gave the city of Orizaba its nickname La señora de los puentes ( The woman of the bridges ). Two of the oldest and most famous bridges are the Puente La Borda , the main artery 7 Avenida Poniente over the river, and built in 1838, the Puente La beneficencia .

Animal enclosure

In order to make the river basin, the city and the region even more attractive for tourism, animal enclosures have been established in the river region, which are home to monkeys, jaguars, deer and raccoons. At the end of May 2013, the area was expanded to include a reptile enclosure.

storm

Although most of the city's residential areas are well above river level, heavy rain showers occasionally lead to flooding, which affects the lower urban areas (such as Avenida Poniente 18 in particular ).
