River course

The Río Pato rises in the south of the Cordillera Oriental , 210 km south-southwest of the capital Bogotá at an altitude of about 2550  m . The headwaters are located in the extreme north of the Department del Caquetá . The Río Pato flows mainly in a southerly direction through a densely forested area on the eastern flank of the mountains. The upper course lies within the Parque Nacional Natural Cordillera de los Picachos . At river kilometer 40 the Río Balsillas flows into the river from the right. The Río Pato finally flows into the Río Caguán 25 km north of San Vicente del Caguán.

The region is to be developed for ecotourism . 17 former FARC rebels were trained as tour guides as part of a training and integration measure. They have been running rubber dinghies ( rafting ) for tourists on the Río Pato since 2018 .
