The Río Tapaje is an approximately 158 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in the southwest of Colombia .

River course

The Río Tapaje rises 12 km from the Western Cordillera in the western Colombian coastal lowlands at an altitude of about 240  m . The Río Patía runs two kilometers further south . The Río Tapaje initially flows 20 km north. Then he turns to the west. At river kilometer 90 the river turns north and maintains this course until its mouth. At river kilometer 23, the small town of El Charco is on the right bank of the river. The river widens over the last 18 kilometers before finally flowing into the sea. The Iscuandé River estuary is 3 km to the east. The Parque Nacional Natural Sanquianga extends west of the mouth of the Río Tapaje .

Catchment area and hydrology

The catchment area of the Río Tapaje covers an area of ​​around 1600 km². It borders in the north on the catchment area of ​​the Río Iscuandé, in the west on that of the Río Tola and the Río Satinga and in the south on that of the Río Patía . The mean discharge is 175 m³ / s.
