The Río Vaupés (Spanish) or Rio Uaupés (Portuguese) is a 1,375 km long right tributary of the Rio Negro in northern South America ( Colombia and northeastern Brazil ). It therefore belongs to the river system of the Amazon .

River course

It rises in the south-east of Colombia, where it flows through the Llanos ( tabular lands ) of the Guaviare and Vaupés departments in the foothills of the Andes in an easterly direction. In the middle course - south of the Mesa de Yambi - it begins to meander strongly and below Mitú forms an approximately 150 km long, semicircular loop of the river , which also represents the state border with Brazil (Amazon province).

From here the Vaupes turns again to the east and bears the Portuguese name Uaupés . Between the city of the same name and Sao Joaquim it flows into the Rio Negro coming from the north.

The name Rio Negro ("black river") comes from the dark color of the water due to humic acid, which comes from the rain-depleted soils in the north. The water of the Vaupes, however, is lighter.

Tributaries

The largest tributaries include (downstream):
