Roman Museum Fort Boiotro

The Roman Museum Kastell Boiotro is a museum located in the Innstadt district of Passau . It opened in 1982. The museum stands on the foundations of the late Roman fort Boiotro , remnants of the military fortifications can be viewed in the museum's outdoor area. Saint Severin , missionary of Noricum , probably had a monastery built in the ruins of the Roman fort at the end of the 5th century , and his records have kept the name Boiotro (late Latin verbal horn for the name of the predecessor fort Boiodurum ) to the present day.

Exhibition and exhibits

The museum, located in the district of Passau Inn city, is a modernized late medieval housed building. Most of the remains of the fort were uncovered in the 1970s following sporadic earlier excavations. The spatial connection between the excavation site and the museum gives visitors an insight into the early history of Passau and its surroundings, as well as into archaeological practice. The exhibits in the museum are limited to finds from Eastern Bavaria and Passau itself. The collection's time horizon extends from the Stone Age to the modern age. A clear focus, however, is on the history of the Passau settlement as well as the finds and excavation results of the Roman era with the model reconstruction of the Roman settlement.

Special exhibitions

The museum offers special exhibitions that change twice a year.
