from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Roman road station is an excavation site in the “Bannstude” area of the municipality of Friesenheim (Baden) in the Ortenau district in Baden-Württemberg. You can see the reconstructions of a section of the Roman road from Basel to Heidelberg ( right section of the Rhine valley ), a stick dam and a small temple dedicated to Diana , the foundation walls of the station (with a small bathhouse and fountain) and the farm buildings are also visible . Placed boards explain the system.

Outline sketch of the street station

The Roman road station was surrounded by a palisade , the bathhouse could be entered directly from the road side, and there was also a fountain outside the enclosure. At the level of the junction of the Knüppeldamm, a little further away on the west side of the road, was the temple of Diana. Inside the enclosure were the main and auxiliary buildings, as well as the stables and other timber-framed farm buildings (they could be identified through the post holes). The Knüppeldamm, leading to the east, turned south shortly after the facility; its further course is unknown. It can be assumed that he developed adjoining manors ( Villa Rustica ). A connection to the second Roman road running in the foothills zone is also likely. The road station presumably existed from the 2nd half of the 1st century to the end of the 3rd century AD.

excavation

The street station was discovered in 1970 from a passing train on the Rhine Valley Railway, which was located right next to the facility . The excavation took place from 1973 to 1977. To the south of the facility at a distance of about 400 meters, further Roman traces were secured. To the north and between the remains of a Roman building, traces of a late Hallstatt settlement were found. To the south of the complex there were Celtic and Neolithic remains.

In addition to the remains of the building, shards were found, various tools, among other things for pegging , a silver denarius with the image of Julia Domna , as well as arrowheads, blades and stone ax remains from the Neolithic Age.
