The Roman grave altar is located in the St. Rupertus Church in Eiselfing , a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Rosenheim . After the restoration of the tomb altar, it was placed to the right of the entrance to the church.

description

When the high altar canteen of St. Rupertus was demolished in 1969, a Roman grave altar was discovered which was walled up in the high altar . The base profile and the truncated pyramid-shaped attachment were partially removed. The altar made of light, yellowish red limestone, so-called Untersberg marble , is 61 cm wide, 126 cm high and has a preserved depth of 39 cm. It belongs to the type of pillar tombs and is dated between 200 and 250 AD. A Latin inscription is carved into the obverse , which reads in German translation:

“Consecrated to the spirits of the dead! Terentinus, son of Taurio, rider of Ala C (?), Died at the age of 30, and Verecunda Cosivia, the mother, died at the age of 65. Aurelius Taurio erected the tombstone for his wife and son together with his daughter during their lifetime. ”A narrow border surrounds the inscription field.

The narrow sides of the upper part show the rear part of a panther and on the left a sacrificial bowl . The narrow sides of the lower block are each decorated with a dolphin .

Remarks

  1. The reading of the inscription is unclear in parts; while Ferdinand Steffan resolves the sequence of letters FEAC , as translated here, to f (ilius) e (ques) a (lae) C (---) , Ute Schillinger-Häfele reads FE AC and resolves to f (ilius) e (ius? ) ac (ceptus?) (“his kindly welcomed son”); see. Ferdinand Steffan: Two Roman gravestones from the Wasserburg am Inn area. In: Bavarian history sheets.
