The reddish kitten owl ( Orthosia (Monima) miniosa , syn .: Taeniocampa miniosa ), also known as the yellowish- red spring owl or oak forest spring owl, is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 30 to 39 millimeters. The basic color of the forewings ranges from yellowish, ocher or brown-orange to reddish. Ring and kidney defects are darkened slightly brownish and have a light border. The middle field is usually darkened reddish brown and sharply delimited on both sides by wavy transverse lines. This makes the species unmistakable. Specimens with a clearly red middle field are classified as f. rubricosa . The hind wings are whitish without drawing.

egg

The hemispherical egg is gray-yellow in color and has distinct ribs.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars show black spots and yellow stripes on a gray-blue background as well as black point warts.

Doll

The black-brown doll is marked by two points on the short cremaster .

Geographical distribution and habitat

The occurrence of the species extends through central Europe and further east to Asia Minor , Western Iran and Transcaucasia . In the Alps it rises to heights of up to 1,100 meters. The reddish cat-owl is preferred in deciduous and mixed forests as well as on bushy forest edges.

Way of life

The moths are crepuscular and nocturnal and visit numerous artificial light sources as well as bait , but prefer flowering pussy willow for ingestion and have also been observed sucking on tree sap and fresh buds. Their early flight time runs largely parallel to the willow blossom ( Salix ) and mainly covers the months of April and May. The caterpillars can be found in May and June. At first they live gregariously, later in small groups and like to hide in spun leaves. The adult animals live individually. They feed polyphagously on the leaves of various trees and bushes, in particular oak species ( Quercus ), but also Prunus , Rubus and hawthorn species ( Crataegus ). The species overwinters as a pupa.

Danger

The reddish kitten owl is represented in all federal states in Germany and is classified in category 3 (endangered) on the red list of endangered species .
