Re-registration (studies)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The re- registration at a university is an administrative process in which a student declares that he wants to continue his studies at the same university in the next semester . This notification is required every semester.

Content of the feedback

In order to continue studying in the following semester, the following actions are generally required:

  • The existence of health insurance or proof that there is no compulsory insurance,
  • the payment of fixed fees and contributions for the continuation of the course as well as
  • further evidence required by the university to continue studying.

Further evidence can be regulated individually by the university on the basis of its regulations and the university laws of the federal states. One example is proof of completion of a bachelor's degree with preliminary admission to a master's degree.

Re-registration process and deadline

The deadlines and the contributions and fees to be paid are published by the universities on their website and on notices. As a rule, the universities send requests for re-registration by post or electronically, although this is not necessarily to be expected. The regulations of the respective universities (e.g. matriculation regulations or study regulations) as well as the university laws of the federal states are decisive for the process. As a rule, re-registration for the following semester must have been made on a set date, which is usually during the lecture period of the previous semester.

For re-registration after the set deadline, late re-registration is usually possible up to the last day of the previous semester, for which, however, fees or late re-registration are often charged. If the (late) re-registration does not take place by the end of the semester, this will regularly result in de- registration . An objection or a challenge to the de-registration notification is possible within the specified period. If this is not successful, the course can no longer be continued in the following semester. As a rule, a new application for a study place is then required.

Re-registration fees and contributions

The fees for re-registration are rarely determined by the university, but rather largely determined by the statutes of the student bodies and the student unions for their contributions as well as by state regulations for tuition fees and administration fees .

The contributions to be paid for re-registration are usually made up

  • a contribution to the student body , which is determined by them,
  • a contribution to the student union , which is also determined by it,
  • a contribution to the semester ticket , which was agreed on the basis of contracts between the transport companies and the student bodies (or rarely also the student unions) and the collection of which is determined by the regulations of the student body and the student union,
  • a late payment surcharge if the re-registration was not made in due time and
  • in federal states in which fees are charged, also from tuition fees or administration fees based on the state regulations and ordinances of the respective universities.

The contributions to the student body can be broken down further and can contain, for example, contributions for university sports, for the student councils and for social funds, for example to support payments for the semester ticket.

The amount due is usually transferred to an account at the university by the student. For the timely receipt of the money, the transit times for a transfer must be observed. At many universities, the amount can also be paid on site in cash or with a girocard at a cash register or a machine. The universities maintain university coffers for this purpose . When paying on site, the payment amount is deemed to have been received immediately.

If the course is completed or broken off before the beginning of the next semester or at the beginning of the semester, the fees will be fully or partially refunded. Often, at least a partial reimbursement of the contributions is made even if the course is only finished or broken off in the first few weeks of the following semester.

Consequences of late or non-response

In addition to the above Ultimate consequence of de-registration, if the re-registration is not made in time after the deadline, failure to meet the deadline will result in a late payment surcharge. The re-registration is then only complete after the re-registration period has been exceeded if the late payment surcharge has also been paid in full.

Furthermore, the re-registration documents, such as the semester ticket and certificates of study, are only printed or provided as an electronic document if the re-registration has already taken place. If the re-registration is made very late, the semester ticket and other documents may not be available in time for the start of the new semester, so that the status as a student may not be proven to third parties for the time being.
