Life

Emshoff studied human medicine , philosophy and dentistry at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and at the Semmelweis University in Budapest. He received his doctorate in 1987 in Düsseldorf as Dr. med. with the work Cutaneous complications induced by continuous subcutaneous infusion. Experimental studies with portable mini-pumps . In 1990 he received his doctorate from the Dental Faculty of Semmelweis University Budapest with the thesis Subgingival microbiota in healthy periodontitis subjects.

In 2001 Emshoff was habilitated at the Medical University of Innsbruck with the writing Strategies for Researching Temporomandibular Disorders: An Evaluation of Sonographic Examination Techniques.

He has been a senior physician at the University Clinic for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Medical University of Innsbruck since 2001. He has also been Head of Facial Pain and Craniomandibular Dysfunction since 1998.

Emshoff is the author of the textbook "Treatment of TMDs: Bridging the Gap Between Advances in Research and Clinical Patient Management" and scientific publications on magnetic resonance imaging and sonography in the head and neck area, surgery of TMJ diseases and rehabilitation of chronic pain syndromes in the facial area.

Emshoff is married to the doctor Iris Emshoff and has three children with her. The family lives together in Innsbruck.

Clinical-scientific contribution

Emshoff, who, after setting up a special unit for facial pain and craniomandibular dysfunction, had presented one of the most extensive studies on magnetic resonance imaging diagnostics of the painful and dysfunctional temporomandibular joint, was able to make a significant contribution to the concept change in the rehabilitation of patients with chronic arthritis of the temporomandibular joint.

In his empirical work, Emshoff focused on the application of reversible, minimally invasive temporomandibular joint surgery, puncture (arthrocentesis) and lavage of the temporomandibular joint, and was able to assign clinically relevant success parameters to this procedure, which has now become standard, for the first time.

In addition to this clinical-scientific activity, he gained international attention by creating a conceptual model to identify clinically relevant effects in the area of chronic craniomandibular pain. Emshoff emphasizes the application of the Receiver Operating Characteristic Methodology in the additional assessment of basic clinical data and names the duration and severity of pain as essential factors that can individually influence the extent of clinically relevant effects. Based on this knowledge, the sample size calculation required to conduct a clinical study can be based on an appropriate, clinically relevant primary endpoint.
