The Rütschistrasse in Zurich-Wipkingen

Rütschi , also Ruëtschi, is the name of a Swiss family whose lineage can be documented in Zurich - Wipkingen from 1504. Its members have been primarily active in the silk industry since the 18th century and later gained prosperity and reputation through property management. Since Salomon Rütschi (d. 1894) was socially committed and successful as a politician, Rütschistrasse in the Wipkingen district in Zurich was named in his honor. Alfred Fortunatus Rütschi (d. 1929) was one of the founders of the Association of Zurich Art Friends and an important patron of the Kunsthaus Zurich .

The parent company of the Rütschi family was in Wipkingen - an independent municipality in the canton of Zurich until it was incorporated into Zurich in 1893 . Salomon Rütschi the Elder (1781–1850) was already active there in silk production. He was an overseer in a calico printing plant in Letten , where colored cotton cloths were produced. As a respected man, Solomon Rütschi was elected to stand still and school property administrator.

Salomon Rütschi-Bleuler

Salomon Rütschi-Bleuler (born November 15, 1817, † May 24, 1894) was appointed council clerk at the age of 19. Later he founded his own silk factory. As an entrepreneur, he was socially committed and financed the first day nurseries for his workers . As a respected local politician, he was a member of the Cantonal Council and the City Council of Zurich. He made great fortunes through his silk manufacture, but also through the high income from his property management, and he was committed to the art and culture of his hometown of Zurich. He generously supported the Harmonie Zurich singers' association and was a member of the Neumünster Charitable Society (GGN) founded in 1831 . In 1859 he founded the non-profit association Wipkingen (GGW) and provided it with start-up capital and a library of 100 books. In 1888 he founded a school fund with CHF 5,000 for the newly founded secondary school in Wipkingen, the interest of which was to be used to purchase teaching materials. In 1881 the Zurich silk weaving school was founded in Letten . For this he set up a scholarship fund of CHF 20,000, which should also enable pupils in need to receive a qualified education. In his will, he gave the Reformed Church Community of Wipkingen a legacy of 50,000 francs to purchase a building plot for the planned new church building. In 1906 the Rütschistrasse in Zurich was named in his honor.

The factory in Mariano 1903

Alfred Fortunatus Rütschi (* April 21, 1868; † September 26, 1929) continued his family's silk business after his father's resignation. He also expanded his company to Italy and set up a silk factory in Mariano, northern Italy . In Mariano he financed the municipal water supply and was awarded honorary citizenship of the city for this. He became interested in the work of the Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler at an early age . He was one of the founders of the Vereinigung der Zürcher Kunstfreunde . In 1919 he gave some of Hodler's works to the Kunsthaus Zürich , such as The Day from 1904/1906. In addition, he made other works of art initially available on loan, which after his death in 1929 could be donated to the “Rütschi Collection”. In addition to painting, he was particularly interested in goldsmithing . He put together a collection of important goldsmith's work from the 11th to the 20th century, which was exhibited in an extension of the Kunsthaus Zürich while he was still alive.

Alfred Erhart Karl Salomon Rütschi (* July 8, 1908; † January 18, 1992) no longer carried on the family's textile tradition. He was active in the real estate industry and as an investor. After the Second World War , he initiated and supervised the Theatinerpassage building project in Munich in the early 1950s . He was one of the first Swiss to invest in Munich's bombed city center.
