Ralph Winston Morris (* 1941 ) is an American tuba player , composer and university professor.

Live and act

Morris studied with William Bell , who was tuba player in John Philip Sousa's orchestra . In 1962 he finished his academic studies at East Carolina University . As a professor of tuba and euphonium, Morris teaches at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville ; There he founded the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble in 1967 with the beginning of his teaching activity , which under Morris' direction on Bourbon Street in New Orleans and at the New Orleans Jazz Festival , in Disney World , at the conference of the National Association for Music Education in Kansas City , performed at the International TUBA Conference in Austin, Texas , the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC , the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina, and New York's Carnegie Hall .

Morris also played in the Matteson-Phillips Tubajazz Consort with Rich Matteson , Ashley Alexander, John Allred , Buddy Baker ( euphonium ), Harvey Phillips and Daniel Perantoni (LP: Super Horn , 1982) in the early 1980s . In later years he was a member of the Brass Arts Quintet .

Morris recorded 22 albums with the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble , some of which were nominated for a Grammy . Throughout his academic career, Morris encouraged his students to arrange and compose repertoire for the ensemble; A total of 600 compositions for tuba, euphonium and tuba ensemble were created in the work with the ensemble. Winston Morris also put together the world's first euphonium choir and organized a recording session for that choir. He also founded the tuba euphonium ensemble Symphonia , whose reunion concert took place as Tubas of Mass Destruction in 2007 at Tennessee Tech University with over 100 of his current and former students.

Morris wrote the books Tuba Music Guide , The Tuba Source Book and Euphonium Source Book , among others , which provide an overview of the repertoire for the two instruments. He is also a co-founder of the Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association (TUBA). In 2003 he received the Caplenor Research Award from Tennessee Tech University for his life's work .
