RA.MM was a Berlin theater , spectacle and performance group that was active from 1986 to 1997.

history

RA.MM, a renaming and reorientation of the RA theater group, which has existed since 1984, was founded in 1986 by the theater maker Arthur Kuggeleyn and the musician Tele Tocar together with a few other artists in Berlin.

The two "M" in the name stand for multi-media. Activities and projects were carried out by the non-profit association RA.MM Theaterart Berlin eV. The first RA.MM performances under the name took place in the autumn of 1986, namely as part of the Berlin festivals Interference and Atonal . Initially, the RA.MM Theater played in a former fire station at what was then Lindenstrasse 40/41 in Berlin. Then the troupe moved into a studio at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien for a year. In 1989 RA.MM, together with the ZATA Theater, became RAMMZATA , a multi-purpose theater on Fidicinstrasse in Berlin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, RA.MM mainly played in the Tacheles theater in Berlin. In 1991 David Vostell made a video about Bestia Pigra . In 1992 RA.MM moved to Schloss Bröllin in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where it installed studios and rehearsal rooms. These gradually became today's "international theater research center". RA.MM ended the 1997 rejection of further funding by the Berlin Senate for Culture

New forms of theater

RA.MM played with various forms of theater and performance, used and invented different styles and genres, some of them new and radical, e.g. For example: radio plays “live” in the dark, “musicals” without singing, room staging, street theater with cars stuck in a traffic jam, or even a theater circus in which lifeless performers are moved by machines. RA.MM experimented with projections, explosions, fire, machines, water, acoustic tones and other elements, which were effectively integrated into the theater spectacles and performances.

Content

Extreme stage situations were used to express social and political content, which sometimes provoked strong reactions from viewers. The audience was drawn into the action and encouraged to participate actively. For example, viewers have attacked, harassed or assisted performers. In Bestia Pigra , where one of the actors sits in the audience with a loaded (theater) pistol and shoots the (naked) performers, the audience becomes an accomplice: after each shot, a conférencier encourages the audience to applaud - which they do does.
