Bröllin Castle

Schloss Bröllin has been an estate in the German region of Western Pomerania that has existed since at least 1233 and is located in the German-Polish border region about 40 km west of Stettin and 130 km north of Berlin.

It is one of the few manors in the region that has been preserved as a whole and is therefore an important testimony to the development of regional agricultural production. It is registered as an architectural monument in the municipality of Fahrenwalde .

Despite the name, the "Schloss" Bröllin is not a castle in the true sense of the word, but an old manor . Inspired by the tower of the manor house , residents began to speak of the "castle" in the 1970s, which gave the place its current name.

location

Bröllin is located in the German-Polish border region, six kilometers south of Pasewalk and 40 km west of Stettin, in the municipality of Fahrenwalde .

The estate covers an area of around 50,000 m 2 of land. The old stable buildings surround the area in a rectangular manner. In the middle is the former granary and an old distillery . The latter was built after the Stoewahs family had acquired the site in 1854.

The manor house is the oldest building on the property and was built in the 18th century. A stone church was built next to the property in 1888 and is now part of the evangelical community of Brüssow .

Today the manor house houses the living quarters for residents and volunteers, the administration, several offices, a common room and a small library. Behind the manor house is the garden of the property with an old ice cellar and historical apiary .

The former sheepfold extends over 100 m along the northern end and is mainly used as a storage room. At the western end there is a workshop and the former riding hall with a concrete floor and high ceiling.

The German-Polish meeting center is now located in the former bull stable in the south. The building was completely renovated between 2005 and 2006 and expanded into a multifunctional center with guest rooms and rooms for rehearsals, workshops and conferences. The second former bull barn houses three studio rooms with dance floors for rehearsals and productions.

history

Early history

The first historical mention of Bröllin is dated to 1233, when the place was still called Bralin, named after its owners at the time. The same family was also registered as owners in the land register of 1375, then under the name Brellyn. According to the records, the land was measured at 50 ' hooves ', which is also the size of the property today. Between 1375 and 1738 the estate belonged to the von Lindstedt family, who sat on Bröllin from 1400 onwards. After the young BH von Lindstedt deserted from the army, the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I handed the property over to one of Görne, who in turn sold it to the Prüwer family.

The Prüwers expanded the Bröllin farm and built the neighboring village of Friedrichshof, where they settled farm workers and shepherds , who in turn paid taxes to Bröllin. Friedrichshof remained under the administration of Bröllin until it was acquired by a municipal settlement company in 1931.

In 1854 the land was acquired by the Stoewahs family. This was a time of enormous growth for German agriculture. In order to be able to meet the enormous demand, the latest technological developments were used in the development and renovation of the property and the buildings. As a result, Bröllin transformed into one of the most modern agricultural production facilities of the time in the entire region. Most of the agricultural buildings and the schnapps distillery date from this period.

DDR / LPG

After the Second World War , rural areas in the Soviet occupation zone were redistributed between different groups and individuals for agricultural purposes as part of the land reform . The Schloss Bröllin estate continued to be operated by various agricultural production cooperatives (LPGs) with 2500 animals and 300 employees. After the fall of the Wall, the LPGs were closed and the property became the responsibility of the Treuhandanstalt .

today

In 1992 the newly founded non-profit association schloss bröllin eV leased the premises from the Treuhandanstalt and began renovation work to convert the place into a production center for performing arts . The aim of the association is to get involved in regional and international networks, to hold workshops and youth projects and to offer space for artistic production and research. The property has been a listed building since 1993 and became the property of Schloss Bröllin eV in 2000 . The association also takes care of the maintenance and care of the buildings and the surrounding land.

Today the manor operates under the name Schloss Bröllin international art research location . It is owned and maintained by the association schloss bröllin eV and operated by employees and volunteers. Many volunteers find their way to Bröllin via the European Voluntary Service and regional initiatives or do a voluntary ecological or social year . The association is funded by the Federal Cultural Foundation , the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , the District of Western Pomerania-Greifswald , the LAG Soziokultur MV eV and the Foundation for German-Polish Cooperation . The closed bröllin eV participates in a number of regional networks and initiatives and since 2014 support the initiative aesthetics and sustainability MV.

During the summer months, Bröllin hosts a number of national and international artists as part of the in-house residency program. Workshops, artistic projects, youth projects, conferences and other events take place regularly in Bröllin. Over 500 productions from the fields of dance, theater and performance have so far been produced in whole or in part in Schloss Bröllin.

Resident artist

From 1992 to 1994 Bröllin lived and worked at the RA.MM Theater under the direction of Arthur Kuggeleyn, which played an important role in the early development of the property into a place for art and culture. Other groups and individuals such as POPE, Ziguri Ego Zoo (Anna Totó Company since 2001), tatoeba-theater danse grotesque, Daniel Weissrot, Delta Rai, Martin Mengdehl, Yumiko Yoshoíoka, Joaxhim Manger and Jens Femerling have the place in the following years co-formed.
