Fields of activity

Cover: "Venus is on strike. Healthy through the power of poetry."

Leitner is a resident doctor in Weßling near Munich and lecturer in general medicine at the Technical University of Munich .

For her book 'Venus is on strike. Healthy through the power of poetry 'she received recognition not only from doctors and readers, but also from numerous writers and literary scholars such as B. Robert Gernhardt , Ulla Hahn , Joachim Sartorius or Karl Otto Conrady . At the interface between medicine and psychotherapy , Leitner positions poetry as part of a holistic concern for the mind and body. The Rheinische Post described Leitner's "Poetry Therapy" as "Poetic penicillin ... a pioneering work in research into alternative medicine."

In order to give patients with physical complaints access to their underlying feelings, Leitner suggests using literary texts, especially poetry. In her book she writes:

“A poem offers many advantages for a sick person: It does not claim to be general [...]. It unobtrusively expresses a mood, a feeling or a thought in which the reader can find himself again [...] "

Without disregarding the classical scientific approaches of medicine, the above approach also aims to help the patient to achieve and strengthen their own autonomy.
