David Vostell (2009)

Santiago David Vostell (born October 10, 1960 in Cologne ) is a German - Spanish composer and film director .

life and work

He was the first child out of the marriage between Wolf Vostell and his Spanish wife Mercedes Guardado . His father and his art formed his worldview from early childhood. The artistic environment of the 1960s and early 1970s and his father's companions such as Nam June Paik and Allan Kaprow , with whom he often sat at the table as a teenager, had a strong influence on him.

In 1978 he completed an internship at the Sender Freies Berlin , at the advertising agency TBWA and as an assistant editor. He worked as a projectionist, photo lab technician and photographer. In 1979 he shot the experimental film 36574 Pictures on Super 8 with former school friends . In 1980 the documentary Endogen Depression was made about the realization of an installation by Wolf Vostell.

In 1982 he made the short film Ginger Hel with Panterra Hamm and Mark Eins , founders of DIN A Testbild . It's a bizarre love story from the Berlin underground. In Norse mythology, Hel is the name of both the underworld and that of their goddess. This allusion to mythology is conveyed in some scenes of the film through the roles of the actors involved in mythological characters. This early short film already shows his particular affinity for music. The film is characterized by music in long rhythmic passages, long camera positions and the actors' plot and dialogues reduced to elementary scenes. This creates a style in which the music accompanies the scenes and is on an equal footing with the film. In Ginger Hel there is a 3 minute long sequence in which takes are cut to the music. The music for this sequence is the title The call of lust by Mark Eins. This is how a "music video" emerged in the film. But here as part of a short film and not as a separate music video. From 1985 to 1987 David Vostell made seven music videos . He started drawing and painting in the early 1980s. David Vostell's music videos can be seen in museum video collections.

In 1990 David Vostell shot the English language feature film The Being from Earth in Los Angeles . The essence of the earth , so the German award title, tells the fantastic story of a being, a mixture of animals and plants, born from the sand of the Mojave desert . The film title primarily refers to the being born from the earth. It is also to be understood as a metaphor . In a figurative sense, it relates to the state of the earth and to the being or to existence . Long tracking shots, the actors' play scenes designed for the essentials, only as many dialogues as necessary and a lot of music reveal David Vostell's individual direction.

In 1992, under his artistic direction, the documentary film Vostell 60 - Retrospect 92 was made about Wolf Vostell's retrospective in several museums in Cologne and other cities in North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1995 he worked on a series of drawings in which he sketched cinematic visions and published the Sketch Book 95/96 . In 1998 the Sketch Book 97/98 was created .

After Wolf Vostell's death in 1998, David Vostell recognized the responsibility in his father's legacy. From 1998 to 2001 he structured the Wolf Vostell Archive and gave it a chronological order.

In 2003 the symphony nº 1 was created , in 2004 the symphony nº 2 . In 2005 David Vostell composed Formulas of Life . 24 suites for 24 fundamental words such as birth, love, and dream. The digital booklet for the CD is a CD (instead of the usual booklet) and shows all 24 words as digital photo collages that are in direct context to his compositions.

In 2006 David Vostell composed The Universe is Music . A soundtrack to the revised video sequences of distant galaxies transmitted to Earth by the Hubble Space Telescope . The digital booklet for the CD shows 26 images of digital photo collages that concretely visualize time travel and the search for alien life forms in the universe.

Between 2007 and 2012 David Vostell composed suites that are again linked to digital photo collages. A digital photo collage was created for each suite, which has the same title as the suite and which were published together. In 2009 the soundtrack for the video Journey through the human body was created . The classic orchestration of the suites, which David Vostell has been composing since 2005, contrasts with the unconventional melodies . Often a leitmotif can be recognized, which is supplemented by other leitmotifs and is free of tonal ties and the key .

In David Vostell's digital photo collages, the relationships to events and things are visually interpreted and expanded through the confrontation of various images in the photo collages. The variety of pictorial elements in the photo collages are a factor in the endless possibilities of their interpretation. The respective combination of a suite with a digital photo collage makes music and images a unit that can be interpreted as individually as the viewer himself.

In 2012 David Vostell - Suites and Digital Photo Collages 2005 - 2012 appeared . This publication shows digital photo collages from these years and includes two CDs with the suites. David Vostell used the technique of digital photo collage, in which he converted a tool in a software for photo editing, for the first time in 2005. In 2010 the collaboration with Iris Brosch developed . From 2010 to 2015, David Vostell composed the music for the videos Prélude , In Paradisum , Die Regen Göttin , Valentina , Woman and Nature near Extinction , L'Uomo and Vita .

style

David Vostell's feature film The Essence of the Earth differs greatly from the conventional cinema understanding. Like the short film Ginger Hel , Das Wesen der Erde is an enigmatic film that continually poses the question of why and only rarely answers it. The viewer's expectation of an explanatory conventional narrative structure quickly gives way to the search for insight. Different interpretations of the plot are possible and also wanted. The film becomes independent and can only be followed with great difficulty. The nature of the earth questions perfection in life and in film. The being in the film is extremely passive. It does not bite, eat or kill. It can only be compared with the character in Eraserhead by David Lynch .

David Vostell's music videos are far from the technical perfection of the music videos of the 1980s. His music videos are experimental mixes of images and music. Fuzzy, restless and often repetitive settings are a style-forming feature contrary to conventions.
