The two electric locomotives of the 34 series of the Rete Adriatica were built in 1901 as the first series of locomotives for the Northern Italian Veltlinbahn of the Rete Adriatica by the Hungarian company Ganz & Cie in Budapest .

technical features

The RA 34 consisted of two halves coupled together, each with its own substructure, chassis, drive and driver's cab. The 1400 mm large drive wheels had a single axle drive.

The frequency-dependent three-phase drive did not allow infinitely variable control with the fixed supply current frequency of the overhead line. After the start-up phase, the maximum speed was 36 km / h.

The electrical energy was transmitted from the two-pole overhead contact line and via the track as the third power line of the three-phase AC system . The original version of the locomotive had a support bracket on the front and back on the roof, on which there were two electrically insulated metal contact strips for the two-pole power line. Later, two separately assembled sanding hanger frames were attached to this carrier hanger.

After the decreed takeover of Rete Adriatica in the newly founded Ferrovie dello Stato , the RA 34s were run as the E.430 series. The later retirement took place in 1928.
