REM (Viennese artist group)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

REM was a Viennese artist group that worked from 1983 to 1990.

It was founded in 1983 on the initiative of Brigitte Prinzgau, Hannes Priesch, Notburga Coronabless, Martin Gostner , C. Angelmaier , Fritz Bergler, Andy Chicken, Irma Eberl, Werner Kaligofsky, Brigitte Pokornik , Peter Rumpf and ManfreDu Schu . Peter Battisti later joined the group and, together with ManfreDu Schu and Hannes Priesch, formed the final constellation. Special emphasis was placed on the design of the exhibition invitations and exhibition posters. REM's diverse program and meticulous installations in a wide range of media and styles caught the attention of critics and art enthusiasts. Among other things, graphic portfolios were created for financing purposes and found their way into the collections of the Albertina , the City of Vienna, the Federal Collection and other public and private collections.

Gallery REM

REM with a public exhibition space ( producer's gallery ) existed from 1984 to 1990. In the premises at Mozartplatz in Vienna's 4th district, a wide range of multimedia was presented: visual arts, including performance and installation, music, design and fashion, but also political discussions took place here instead of. Contributions from members of the artist group REM alternated with presentations from guests: Artists from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, the former Yugoslavia, the USA and Canada. Guests were about: Walter Obholzer , Eva Bodnar, Ernst Trawöger, Vladimir Gudac, Andras Böröcz, Sugar Janos, Jochen Traar, Gue Schmidt, Franz Graf, Martin Walde, Markus Gstrein, Hans Pfefferle, Hubert Scheibl, Karl Hikade, Ines Lombardi, Gustav Troger, Robert Adrian X , Bruno Gironcoli and other Austrian and international artists.

Changing organizers also contributed significantly to the success of REM: Brigitte Prinzgau, Jutta Kleber, Olli Aigner, Christine Schumacher, Wolfgang Schrom, Notburga Coronabless, Sabine Breitwieser and Peter Battisti.

It all started in 1984 with “REMBrand und Haifisch”, the title and description of the buffet on offer. The members of the REM group performed models by fashion designer Notburga Coronabless to music by Peter Battisti on the catwalk.

In 1987/88 REM went on tour with the multimedia project "When the proud enemies sleep". An adapted post bus brought the artists and their art to Dortmund, Bremen, Lublijano, Zagreb, Budapest and later to Dreieich near Frankfurt a. M. The exhibitions opened with spectacular performances, an eclectic mix of ritual, music and fashion.

The end of the place and the REM group was celebrated in 1990 with the three-day festival "REM IS TOT". A staging in the rooms at Mozartplatz including a funeral feast and concert with the band EARFUCK was at the beginning and the journey in a dark blue taxi convoy with dipped headlights that brought the REM artists and guests from Mozartplatz to the cemetery of the nameless was at the end.
