RM is the debut mixtape of the South Korean rapper RM of the boy band BTS . It was released on March 20, 2015 by Big Hit Entertainment on SoundCloud .

In an interview for Singles Magazine, RM expressed a desire to publish a mixtape . RM used the time between his engagements as a member of the BTS group to work on his mixtape. He worked on it for about four to five months in total.

Music and poetry

The final cut by RM includes 11 tracks on SoundCloud.

In RM , RM reacts to his critics, reflects his insecurities and doubts and reveals his belief in himself. In the opening track, Voice, RM raps about his past while a simple piano loop runs in the background. Do You with its monotonous beats contained the core message of the mixtape, which advised the listeners to lead an autonomous life without social standards. The following title, Awakening, deals with RM's internal conflict between his identity as an “idol” versus his “artist”, before he quickly retorts the hatred of his haters in the track Monster , and in Throw Away demands that his listeners share their prejudice and bias lay down. In Joke , RM presented his rap techniques with stream of consciousness lyrics , while God Rap reflected RM's atheistic belief that only you control your destiny. In Life , RM presented an investigation into life, death and loneliness with calm, composed black rap that led into the track Adrift , which looked at the meaning of life and happiness. The final track, I Believe , closes the mixtape with RM's confidence in himself and his determination to move on.

Publication and promotions

On March 11, 2015 RM announced the release of his debut mixtape for 17 March by the cover of mixtapes on the blog page of BTS along with the theme You do you, I do I published. In the run-up to the release of the mixtape, a music video entitled Awakening was released on March 13th . The mixtape was released on SoundCloud on March 20, 2015 and could then be downloaded for free via links on BTS 'blog in conjunction with a music video for Do You . On March 27, RM released a music video for Joke . Apart from interviews for magazines like Hip Hop Playa and IZE , RM did not promote the mixtape any further. It later ranked 48th in Spin's 50 Best Hip-Hop Albums of 2015.
