The Cathedral of Marília or the Cathedral Basilica of St. Benedict ( Portuguese Catedral Basílica de São Bento ) is a Roman Catholic church in the center of Marília in the Brazilian state of São Paulo . The cathedral of the Diocese of Marília is dedicated to the city patron Benedict of Nursia and has the rank of a minor basilica . The church of the oldest parish in the city was built in the 20th century in colonial and neo-baroque style.

history

Even before Marília was officially founded a few years after the settlement began in 1929, the foundation stone for the parish church of St. Benedict was laid on May 1, 1928. The then diocese of Cafelândia then founded the parish of St. Benedict a few years after its own creation in 1926 on July 15, 1929, which remained the only one in the city of Marília until 1936. On January 15, 1934, the college, today's Herz-Jesu-Institut, was founded with 15 sisters. A large number of social and charitable works developed in and around the parish of St. Benedict.

On February 16, 1952 with the creation of the Diocese of Marilia by Pope Pius XII. the Benedict Church raised to the Cathedral of St. Benedict with Bishop Henrique Gelain as the first apostolic administrator. The church consecration with the consecration of the main altar took place on August 15, 1974. On December 7, 1975 the cathedral was given by Pope Paul VI. awarded the rank of minor basilica. The interior was restored from 1998-2000, the exterior from 2019.

architecture

The three-aisled basilica was built on the plan of a Latin cross . The narrow aisles are separated from the central nave by three arches on rectangular columns and have no church stalls. The end of the chancel is straight. All ceilings are flat. Walls and ceilings are completely painted. During the renovation up to 2000, the already badly dilapidated mosaic floor was replaced by a granite floor. An electronic instrument has been used as the organ since 2013.

The facade was designed in a colonial style with a steeple on the left side of the portal. The stairs and the stucco elements are set off in blue. The church tower has three bells from 1950.
