Rabia ( Arabic ربيعة, DMG Rabīʿa ; Kurdish ڕەبیعە) is a small town in northwestern Iraq located on the border with Syria and the al-Yaʿrubiyya border crossing . It is located on the road connection ( Autobahn 1 ) that leads from Qamishli in Syria to Mosul and from there further south. Administratively, Rabia belongs to the Tal Afar district of the Ninawa governorate .

economy

Ninawa is not only one of the Iraqi governorates with the highest poverty, but also among those with the worst security situation. The 2014 Iraq crisis, triggered by the advance of the Islamic State (IS) fighters, dramatically aggravated the economic and security situation again and forced numerous people to leave their homes. Accordingly, the smuggling of goods of all kinds was and is one of the most important branches of the economy for the population still resident in Rabia.

history

In the course of the rapid advance of the IS jihadists , between 200 and 300 families from other parts of the country reportedly had fled to Rabia by mid-June 2014, which soon became the only border crossing into Syria that was still under the control of the Iraqi government - specifically: the one with their ally Kurdish Peshmerga - found.

In the further course of their offensive, from which the Kurdish forces withdrew in this area, the IS fighters also brought the city and the surrounding area under their control. On September 30, 2014, the Kurdish Peshmerga began to recapture the city as part of their counter-offensive. They were supported by local tribesmen and the British Air Force , which had since joined the international military coalition against the Islamic State. By October 1, 2014, the allies had succeeded in driving the IS fighters out of the city, except for around 30 who had holed up in a hospital building that was not yet completed. According to Kurdish information, 12 IS fighters were killed in the fighting.
